10 Things We Know About Disney’s "Star Wars": Galaxy's Edge Attractions

A galaxy far, far away will be within your reach in 2019, when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens at Disneyland Resort before opening at Walt Disney World Resort later that year.

Here's what we know about it so far:

The attractions will be set on the remote trading port of Batuu, on the edge of the galaxy. When sub-lightspeed travel was the primary mode of transportation, Batuu was a bustling town, but as hyperspace travel took over, it was forgotten. Now Batuu is a magnet for those who deal in black market trade. And for any who seek to hide from the First Order, its environs are ideal.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will feature a marketplace, a cantina, and two main attractions: a Star Destroyer and the Millennium Falcon.

The Star Destroyer attraction will be built on a massive scale never attempted by Disney before. Guests will feel like they are on a Star Destroyer inside a hangar bay right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

The second attraction gives you a chance to fly the Millennium Falcon. While attempting to complete a critical mission, you will pilot the ship, shooting blasters, and preparing for hyperspace. If you damage the ship, a bounty may be put on your head. Outlaws who end up on bounty hunter Harko's list may have trouble if they appear at the cantina.

As in all the Disney parks, you will get the chance to encounter your favorite characters from the movies like BB-8, Chewbacca, and various members of the First Order.

You can try galactic fare at the cantina (assuming you aren't a criminal). So far only one of the menu items has been confirmed—blue milk. In Star Wars, blue milk is also known as Bantha milk since it's produced by large goat-like creatures called banthas. A rich milk, it can be drunk on its own or used to create yogurt, ice cream, and butter. There's no word yet on what form it will take in Batuu's cantina.

If you remember the original Star Tours ride at Disney, look for a familiar face at the cantina. Rex, the nervous pilot droid who wasn't very good at his job, may have found a job more suited to his abilities—DJ. While it's unclear what kind of tunes he will be playing, he'll be waiting to serenade you as you eat.

The local Batuu marketplace will be modeled after the busy markets of Istanbul and Marrakech. The marketplace will be full of lively merchant stalls and shops containing toys and merchandise from the Star Wars galaxy. Keep an eye out for Toydarian, a Tatooine character from "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," who will run one of the stalls in the marketplace.

You can already get merchandise from Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge! If you want to attend the grand opening in style, you might want to pick up your gear at select locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. There are shirts, hats, and other merchandise available for both men and women.

Though the attraction isn't open yet, you can get a preview by looking for the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge model on view at the end of the Walt Disney Presents exhibit at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Only a portion of the model is on display, but hopefully, it will tide you over until more information is released about this exciting new addition to the Disney Resorts.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge may be opening next year, but 2019 still seems far away. Luckily, Disney has events and adventures to keep you busy until then, including scavenger hunts, parties, live shows, Jedi training, and the classic 3D experience, Star Tours. With so much to do, the next year is sure to fly by.
